Mission Statement: Toy Libraries Victoria promotes the importance and the value of play. It aims to raise the profile of Toy Libraries in the community by publicising the role of Toy Libraries in supporting families.

It aims to encourage, inform and respond to the needs of prospective and existing Toy Libraries, using accumulating knowledge and depth of experience. Networking of Toy Libraries is a key priority.

Membership fees fund the work of the association which is managed by a Committee who offer their services on a voluntary basis. The Committee meets monthly and consists of employees and volunteers from a variety of toy libraries. Metropolitan toy libraries with a membership of 80 or more families are required to provide a committee member every three years. This ensures they do not operate in isolation and provides an opportunity for networking. It also helps to ensure the viability of Toy Libraries Victoria.

  Toys

  • will promote "good" play by aiding in the development, education and imaginative capacity of the child, and form in the child the ability to share and co-operate with other children
  • are well designed and constructed
  • are durable and safe

It's not only young humans who play as a way to learn, young animals do too. A kitten will chase, pounce on and play-fight a ball of wool or a toy mouse. It is busy learning how to hunt and catch its dinner.

Children have much more to learn and it takes much longer to grow up. So many skills to learn - such as how to walk, talk and make things with your hands. Each one needs lots of time spent playing and practising to perfection.

A useful reference for anyone involved with a toy library is the "Safe toys for kids" guide provided for free by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission.
